Health Tips – Vitamin D, Are You Getting Enough?

It has been estimated that between 40 – 70% of the US population is deficient in Vitamin D. That is a HUGE number. What could be causing it?

Well for starters, lack of sunshine! Our skin actually produces Vitamin D when we are exposed to sunshine, but it seems like quite a few of us are stuck inside buildings for most of the time the sun is out shining. Then, if we do make it outside, we slather ourselves in sunscreen which has the perhaps unintended side-effect of also blocking our body’s ability to make Vitamin D.

So why is Vitamin D so important?

Benefits of sufficient amounts of Vitamin D include:

– Necessary for calcium absorption. Think strong bones.

– Supports brain health

– Supports muscle function

– Supports a healthy immune system

– Supports healthy emotions

– Reduces risk of other diseases

– Supports healthy fertility rates and healthy pregnancies

Perhaps you’re thinking, but I spend PLENTY of time outside! Surely my levels are good?! They could be, but Vitamin D production depends on several factors, not just how long you are out in the sun. Things that influence how much Vitamin D your body can make include the season of year, your geographic location, city smog, your skin pigmentation, your age, and use of sunscreen, just to name a few.

Normally I highly encourage you to get the nutrients you need through diet. Unfortunately, Vitamin D is one of those that just isn’t highly available in food sources. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are going to be your best dietary sources of vitamin d. Combine lack of sunlight with a lack of food sources and what you’re left with is supplementation.

But of course, not all supplements are made the same. When it comes to Vitamin D, I really prefer a liquid or chewable form for easier, faster absorption. I have personally found that with pills or capsules that are swallowed, I just don’t get the same benefits.

So if you’re suffering from lack of energy, respiratory issues, the “Winter Blues”, or need immune support you might want to look at your Vitamin D levels.
