Bach Flower Remedies

What in the world are Bach Flower Remedies?

Oh my friends, you are in for a treat!

To understand Bach Flowers, let’s first learn a little bit about the man who developed them, Dr. Edward Bach. Dr Bach lived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He was a surgeon and bacteriologist, but became dissatisfied with modern medicine when he found that it came up short in serving the whole person in the areas of health and wellness. Dr. Bach felt that the medical society mostly just suppressed symptoms and burdened the sick with heavy medical fees. Bach was a man of deep convictions and felt that healing should be gentle, painless, and non-invasive. Dr. Bach went on to study homeopathic medicine and found there more of the method of healing he was looking for. But even in homeopathy, Dr. Bach took some issue. His conviction that no toxic or poisonous substance could ever really function as a cure in the healing of the human frame lead him to continue his own work in finding pure substances that could help bring healing to the mind, body, and spirit.

In his years of work and research, Dr. Bach noted that more than any remedy, a person’s personality and mindset had more to do with their healing than anything else. A nature lover from a young age, Dr. Bach noted that the strongest power of any plant was present in it’s flower. This eventually lead him to making his simple Flower Remedies that helped balance the emotions of his patients and thus allowed their bodies to get on with the practice of healing themselves.

In the simplest of terms, Bach Flower Remedies are the essences of specific flowers. 38 of them to be exact. They are similar in nature to homeopathic remedies, and are characterized as such, but their manufacture is a little different. Flower Remedies are made by floating flowers in spring water out in the sun. Once the flowers are wilted they are removed from the water and what is left is the essence of the flower itself inside the water. A small amount of preservative (alcohol or glycerine) is then added to the flower essence to stabilize it.

Due to the gentle nature of these Remedies, they can be used by any creature or even plants to great effect. There are no side effects associated with using them and they will not interfere with any medications. They are appropriate for use from birth to death and any time in-between. Each of the 38 flowers have been categorized into 7 different Roots of Emotional Imbalance:

  • Fear
  • Uncertainty
  • Lack of Interest in the Present
  • Loneliness
  • Oversensitive
  • Despondency
  • Over-concern for Others

I personally have both seen and experienced great healing when using Bach Flower Remedies. I like using Bach Flowers when I’m feeling overwhelmed or exhausted. When I’m having trouble making decisions or feeling isolated. When I’ve seen or experienced a traumatic event. When I’m dealing with changing circumstances or am unsure of myself. There are so many times when our emotional state seems to hinder us from moving forward in our lives and Bach Flowers are a great tool for helping us get back on track.

I love that they’re even gentle enough to use with pets. I’m a cat owner and have used Bach Flowers successfully with my fur babies. Back in 2022, one of my cats became severely depressed. Poor boy had several major shocks and life changes hit him in a very short period of time. He got to the point where he didn’t want to be around anyone and just spent all of his time hiding in our garage. I had recently learned of Bach Flowers at the time and decided to see if they really could help him. I chose an appropriate Remedy and gave it to him as directed. I was amazed at how quickly he turned around! In only a few days he went from hiding in the garage as much as possible to hanging out with the family again. It was wonderful to behold and I have been a believer in the power of these Flower Remedies ever since.
